Prairie Dog Borough of NYC

Prairie Dogs on watch out

This page is dedicated to my favorite pets. Prairie Dogs live in burrows, therefore you have my three adorable Prairie Dogs with their own borough in NYC. As you will find out their names are Schotzie, Petie, and Charlotte. You will see several pictures and video captures of them on this page.

I bought Schotzie in April of 99 as a baby.

It is recommended that you have more than one Prairie dog because of their need for social interaction. So, after a month of bonding with Schotzie, I decided to get her a friend. That is when I bought Petie. Petie gets his name because of the Prairie Dogs initials are PD, thus you get Petie. =) While I was selecting Petie at the pet store, I noticed another Prairie Dog. But, I chose Petie. I took Petie home where he and Schotzie didn't exactly "hit it off." I felt bad for Petie so the next day I went and picked up his cage mate (Charlotte). Then, they all began bonding and forming their own Prairie Dog town.

My babies, as I refer to them, love attention. They are very social animals that REQUIRE much attention. If you consider getting a Prairie Dog, I would recommend learning a lot about them first. They are not like a fish, you need to have time for these guys. Below, I will be inserting links that will help you learn about them. Also, if you live in the NYC area, or Long Island, I would recommend checking into buying them from Parrots of the World in Rockville Center. Marc Marrone (Metro Pets Host) is very knowledgeable and can provide great advice. Thank you for your interest in these incredible little creatures.

Petie's Ordeal

Petie in CastPetie had made it known that he required special monitoring after he fell and broke his front leg. He did this while climbing the outside of his cage, and falling onto a hardwood floor. In late July of 2000 I woke up one morning and found Petie out of his cage. He was laying on the floor in front of the cage. He saw me and started moving towards me with his back legs lifelessly dragging behind him. I looked at the cage and the doors were not open, and there was nothing to suggest how he may have escaped. I quickly came to the conclusion that he had forced himself between the spring-loaded door and the cage and became stuck and wiggled his body to get free. During the wiggling, he must have injured the nerves in his back. I thought it had broken his back but Vet took x-rays and there were no broken bones. He was given medication to try and help heal his problem, but no response. He seemed happy, so it was decided that he could live life with this condition. There were no major side effects, just scratched feet from dragging them around.

Two years after suffering his paralyzing injury, Petie passed on. He was a couragous little animal with a heart to survive. He is missed dearly, and is an inspiration in perserverence.
